Radio System

Jefferson County 9-1-1 is a member/owner of a tri-county radio system, known as the SLATER system. We, along with St. Charles and St. Louis Counties operate and maintain this system. This is a P25 Compliant 800 MHz system, which allows direct communications for public safety in Jefferson, St. Charles and St. Louis County, City of Saint Louis, and three Counties in Illinois.

The design includes 18 radio towers spread out across the county. The towers are designed and located in areas of the county to provide line of sight communications with a microwave back bone supporting the transportation of voice and data.

The system is designed to be redundant, in the event communications are severed at one tower site, the system will continue to operate with little or no degradation.

This system gives public safety personnel the much needed two way communications they require when dealing with multi-jurisdictional emergencies. It also gives them the ability to have communications with other counties in the region when handling large scale incidents.

The radio system and tower sites are maintained by Radio Technician Tom Nahlik.
